Radio

A little high school that learned about how to accept the mentally handicapped. This story is very inspiring and makes people realize that people with disabilities are just the same as normal people and they should be treated the same way. Coach Jones saw Radio walking around the field and he wanted him to help out the team. Some players did not agree with coaches decision but it was a good way to show that everyone needed to accept people with disabilities.

I have a uncle that has a disability and he just the same as everyone else he helps out and everyone treats  him nicely and he talks and has conversations with others. Radio was a loner he did not know what society was like. He seemed to just walk around all day listening to his radio and pushing his cart and would go home at a certain time to eat dinner, but Coach Jones was a person who wanted to show Radio society and everyone was their to help him.  Even if the school did not appreciate Radio being there Coach Jones saw it as a way to show students , faculty and even the community that people should accept  everyone not matter what their color, race, or disability is.

Over all Coach Jones did the right thing by taking this boy off the streets and helping him and making the community realize that people with disabilities need to be accepted by everyone and give them the help the deserve. I think this story is a great way to prove that to people.

When We were Kings

The Story of " The Rumble in the Jungle" and of how Muhammad Ali made his comeback in defeating George Forman in the eighth round with  KO. Ali who was a big trash talker was ready to show the world he was ready to take Forman. He said he would " Dance" with Forman. I think that Ali was out of his mind because Forman was a big man and a scary one to say the least. Forman's type of boxing was different for Ali's he would just demolish his competition like he did with Joe Frazier and the famous quote " Down goes Frazier." Ali did not care what Forman did in his past he just wanted beat Forman and dismantle him.

Ali would do some unorthodox ways of training he would have his spawing partners just hit him and have he up against the rope and he would want them to do this so he could take the hits Forman would give him in the fight. Ali was getting read for the fight of his life and he would do anything to win. The fight was in Zaire and now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, there was a huge buzz B.B. King and James Brown would be there and the whole world would be watching. Ali was ready to fight Forman.

Ali started off the fight with Ali using his speed and skill to attack Forman and Forman seemed to get a picture of how hard this fight was going to be. I think that Ali did everything he did to get ready for this fight and would do everything in his power to win. He even let Forman get a few punches in before letting lose on Forman. Ali and Forman did not like each other and Ali was ready to trash talk every moment of everyday to win. Trash talking is a very difficult thing in sports especially if you cannot back it up but Ali could "I done wrestled with an alligator, I done tussled with a whale, only last week I murdered a rock, injured a stone, hospitalized a brick. I'm so mean I make medicine sick.' I believe that Ali was an unreal boxer he would do as much trash talking as he could do scare his opponents.  Ali vs Forman could be one of the most interesting and talked up sporting events in the world.

Slap shot

One of the greatest hockey movies of all time starting Paul Newman a man known for playing a rough tough character in movies and the Hanson brothers who are hot headed hockey players who always want to start a fight on the ice. The story of the Charlestown Chiefs is a very interesting story a very poor and down on their luck team will try everything to get back on their feet.

The Hanson brother are the answer to the Chiefs problems they are a entertainment and business boost. The three goons lead by the player coach Reggie Dunlop see a new way of playing hockey instead of the simple layed back way they they see a new style of play the " Goon" way of starting fights with other teams rallying the crowds and giving them what they want.

The plot line in the movie kinds of goes away from the hard hitting and the hockey aspect and goes to a more economic aspect to see who will by the the Chiefs. Dunlop tells the team that they might be bought and move to Florida. This part of the movie getting kinda dull and makes me not watch the movie. However the movie goes back to the hard hitting team that Chiefs are but Dunlop tells the team that they have not buyer for the team and the team is disappointed. They have a big game against rival Syracuse Bulldogs with there ruthless players of Ogie Orgilthorp and Tim "Dr. Hook" McCrackan they have to play,  but the Chiefs owner Dickie Dunn wants the team to play " Old Time Hockey." The Chiefs get man handled in the first period then realize to win the championship they have to play goon hockey. The Chiefs come back and win the game and celebrate with the Charlestown fans.

Slap shot shows how that types of sports play different ways from crazy, goon games to a gentlemen's game. I think this movie is a good example of that. I think Slap Shot is a movie that shows the goon side of sports and shows how athletes sometime forget the origin of their sport.

Glory Road

" 3,2,1, and Texas Western has won the 1966 NCAA Championship" The little school down in El Paso, Texas who had very little chance of even getting a win in division one let alone beating power house Kentucky with their brutal coach Adolf Rupp. However Coach Don Haskins a high school girl basketball coach realized he needed to find players that could play and play together as a team even if it was with an all black line up. Starting an all black line up in a National Championship game was unheard of but Coach Haskins was out to make a point that blacks could play the sport. I think that the recruiting of the seven black players to Texas Western made America realize that black players were just the same as whites and had the ability to entertain the crowd just as well. That starting five Bobby Joe Hill, David Latin, Nevil Shed, Harry Floury,and Orsten Artis proved that Texas Western did not care about color or race but wanted to show the nation that Texas Western had accepted blacks.

Even though Texas Western when through so much with dealing with racism and not being able to be accepted in the south lit a fire under the team to propel them to national championship status. If I was in the position of Don Haskins I would be proud to have black players and be different from the rest of the south and the nation. Even if it might be difficult to cope with the racism and hatred  towards blacks.

This movie is up there with some of the greatest sports stories and upsets of all time. A nation that did not even know where Texas Western was and gave little support to them in the 1966 NCAA championship vs Kentucky. I believe that this little school in El Paso, Texas believed that their team could be good and knew that they could do big thing in Division I.

Over all this Texas Western team had the heart to win that David vs Goliath game vs Kentucky and wanted to go out an prove that blacks where just the same as whites. I would hope that the little school and in El Paso backed their team. The black community backed up the team from Texas Western even a group of students in Kentucky did and wanted them to succeed. I think this story is one of the most inspiring sports stories of all time.

Coaching In Miracle and Super Bowl

The man Coach Herb Brook is one the toughest coaches in the History of Hockey . He pushed his players to the limit. However I think he went a bit over board when he forced his players to do sprints after they had tied  the Norwegian national team. He forced them to do sprints after a full hockey game and embarrassed his players in front of the whole arena. A true coach should have looked at film and told his players what they did wrong as well as how they need to improve.

Bill Belichick another hard coach has his ways of coaching and ways of telling his players to do well and push them. I think he is a great coach who is calm and will do what ever it takes go achieve greatness. However maybe he needs to be a bit more tough on his players to get that fourth Super Bowl.

Being a tough and layed back coach has its benefits. However teams these days need that hard ass mentality and a coach that drives them.
